Who Will Table the Hudud Bill?

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS is expected to table its Hudud Bill in Parliament as early as June, or the latest by September. According to Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob it would be tabled by a PAS MP from that state.

PAS is expected to receive support from Umno when the bill is tabled. It currently has 21 seats in Parliament. Of these, nine are from Kelantan.

They are Kamaruddin Jaafar (Tumpat), Izani Husin (Pengkalan Chepa), Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Baru), Nik Abduh Nik Aziz (Pasir Mas), Siti Zailah Yusoff (Rantau Panjang);Ahmad Baihaki Atiqullah (Kubang Kerian), Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (Bachok), Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad ( Pasir Puteh) and Dr Hatta Ramli ( Pasir Puteh).

But who is most likely to table the bill?

Kamaruddin was formerly with think tank, Institut Kajian Dasar, linked to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim in the 90s.

Takiyuddin, a former state exco, was in charge of the party’s polls committee during PAS’ annual general meeting last year.

Nik Abduh is currently PAS central committee member and a former deputy chief in the party’s youth wing. He is also PAS’ spiritual leader, Nik Aziz Nik Mat’s son and is close to the ulama faction within the party.
Hatta Ramli, a former party treasurer and currently the party’s election director, has good relations with other component parties, similar to party deputy president Mohamad Sabu.

Hatta belongs to the professional group within the party. The sole woman, Siti Zailah, is the women wing chief. She courted the ire of women’s groups when she blamed rape victims for dressing indecently.

From their backgrounds, it is likely that Nik Abduh will table the bill as he is well accepted among the ulama faction.
