Huan Growing More Confident now

GEORGE TOWN: A week after campaigning, Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president (PCM) Huan Cheng Guan is now confident of not losing his deposit and securing at least 15% votes, mostly from Malays, in the Bukit Gelugor by-election on May 25.

Huan said his biggest vote bank would be the Malay constituents in Sungai Gelugor, Bukit Gelugor, Taman Tun Sardon, Sungai Dondang, Jalan Cheesemen, Kampung Melayu and Kampung Shaikh Madar.

During a press conference to announce his candidacy 10 days ago, Huan urged voters to save his election deposit.

Huan needs to secure at least 12% of the votes cast on Sunday to get back his deposit of RM10,000.

“I can safely say that the majority of Malay voters are supporting me,” Huan told newsmen during another walkabout today.

Huan and his campaign team had been putting up billboards, banners, posters and streamers, and distributing fliers and copies of his manifesto to voters in the constituency.

He has been listening to voters’ grouses and assuring them to do his best to resolve the issues if elected.

The seasoned politician said he was delighted to meet his former contemporaries and old friends during his walkabouts.

“I am confident that I can do my part to help them,” said the 53-year-old Datuk Huan.

Huan said certain quarters had damaged and even removed his campaign materials including a billboard put up in Jalan Yeap Chor Ee and banners hung on a campaign lorry.

He urged these people to allow a free, fair and clean campaign.

“I am just a small fry compared with the might of DAP machinery and no threat to anyone.

“Please campaign in a healthy manner,” he added.

Huan faces favourite Ramkarpal Singh Deo, 38, of Penang ruling party the DAP and two independents Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohamed Abdul Sathar, 63, and Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan, 46, in a four-cornered fight for Bukit Gelugor supremacy.

The Bukit Gelugor federal seat fell vacant after incumbent MP Karpal Singh was killed in an accident on the North-South Highway near Kampar, Perak on April 17.

Seri Delima, Air Itam and Paya Terubong are state seats under Bukit Gelugor.

The late Karpal polled 55,839 votes to score a majority victory of 41,778 votes against BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam, who could just garner 14,061, in the 2013 General Election.

Bukit Gelugor has 82,431 voters comprising 61,267 (74.33%) Chinese, 11,913 (14.46%) Malays, 8,848 (10.73%) Indians and 403 (0.49%) others.
