Water disruption hits 51,500 users in KL, Hulu Langat

In view of the recent dry spell and high demand of water, there will be an unscheduled water disruption in the Hulu Langat district and Kuala Lumpur.

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) said in a statement that the margin of reserved treated water that can be produced by the water treatment plants in Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan and Putrajaya is very low, which is less than 2%.

"Based on the information by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), several ponds had experience low levels of supply due to high demand of water, causing the unscheduled water disruptions in Hulu Langat and Wilayah Persekutuan districts on June 17 and June 19, respectively."

SPAN added that Syabas estimated some of 51,500 users will be affected by the water disruption. SPAN has ordered Syabas to prepare and deploy water trucks to distribute water supply to the affected areas.

It noted that the water supplied to the affected areas comes from the Semenyih and Langat water treatment plants, which have been producing about 688 million litres per day and 482 million litres per day, respectively, about 25% more than the plants' capacity.

"Syabas will also continue to monitor the water supply in Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan and Putrajaya," it said.

SPAN advised the public to be prudent in using water to allow the supply to be restored to its original capacity soon.
