Here's a riveting and eye-opening report by Athi Shankar of Free Malaysia Today. The world has to know the truth. Please read and share as much as you can - the sad, tragic story of C Selvam, driver of the late Karpal Singh. Thank you, Datuk Huan, for saving him and for your kindness. Thank you, Athi and FMT for featuring this important report.
GEORGE TOWN: The former driver of the late Karpal Singh, C Selvam, 27, feels hollow, abandoned and betrayed by his employer’s family after being left to languish in Taiping prison for more than a month.
Although Selvam is out on bail, thanks to the timely intervention of Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan, the Indian national has been struggling to pull himself together, crying and grieving in jail pending trial.
Selvam did not know anyone in Malaysia except his employer Karpal and his family and never thought for a moment he would be abandoned and left to rot in a “foreign” jail.
During his remand, he prayed daily for Karpal’s family to bail him out but help never came.
He recalled that not a single member of Karpal’s family visited him in Taiping prison.
No representatives from the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur visited Selvam, who is from Velore in Tamil Nadu, India.
Selvam claimed that his belongings, last left in Karpal’s home in Kuala Lumpur, were never returned to him.
When he was finally bailed out, Selvam was shocked to find out that he was saved by an unknown “Chinese Datuk.”
He is now grateful to Huan and the Datuk, whom he had never met before, for bailing him out.
Huan posted bail of RM5,000 last Monday and Selvam was released the next day.
“I was crying in jail every day, thinking of my family in India, my late boss and my friend Micheal Cornelius.
When I was told someone posted bail for me, I thought it was Karpal’s family.”
“I was shocked when I found out it was a Chinese Datuk. I felt betrayed, abandoned and hollow.
“When I met Huan at the courthouse in Kampar, I thanked him for taking me out of prison.
“He is like a god to me now,” said a relieved Selvam.
Huan bought new clothes for Selvam and a mobile phone for him to contact his parents and two younger siblings in India.
Selvam will be under Huan’s care pending his case in Kampar.
Huan has sought the help of Gerakan’s legal and human rights national bureau chairman Baljit Singh to provide legal aid for Selvam.
Selvam was charged with dangerous and reckless driving on July 9 under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM5,000 which he could not afford.
The charge carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or RM20,000 fine or both, upon conviction.
The case management is on Sept 5.
Selvam was driving Karpal’s Toyota Alphard when it collided with a lorry on the North-South Expressway near Kampar on April 17.
The accident killed Karpal, 74, and his aide Michael, 39, on the spot.
Karpal’s Indonesian maid Selfiana Rengga, 26, who was also in the vehicle was seriously injured but has since recovered.
Selvam and Karpal’s third son Ramkarpal Singh escaped with minor injuries.
After the accident, Selvam said he was sent on the same day by a DAP politician to stay with a relative of Karpal in Ipoh pending police investigation.
“The family took good care of me,” said Selvam, adding that he only saw Karpal’s daughter Sangeet Kaur twice during his stay there.
Selvam said he was dropped off at the Kampar police station by the relative’s driver on July 9.
Police took him to the court to be charged.
“I was left all alone, stranded and devastated not knowing why I was charged,” he said.
Selvam became Karpal’s employee on Sept 27 2013 to provide for his poor family in India.
“I told my parents that I would be working for a famous political and legal family,” he said.
Selvam said he was not supposed to drive Karpal back to Penang on that fateful day. However, when Karpal asked him why he was not ready, Selvam quickly got dressed and drove the vehicle.
At first, Selvam was hired to work as an assistant to Micheal for RM1,500 monthly to provide nursing care for Karpal.
“Micheal told me it would be advantageous if I had a driving licence,” he said.
However, Selvam claimed he was used as a driver, office boy and gardener, waking up before 6am and sleeping after midnight daily.
Selvam and Micheal stayed in Karpal’s home in Kuala Lumpur most of the time and travelled with the politician everywhere, including Penang, mostly during the wee hours.
Besides being a family driver, Selvam helped Micheal to care for Karpal, carry legal documents, as well as cleaning the garden and watering the plants.
He and Micheal were not provided any meals although they were provided accommodation in Karpal’s house.
“Sometimes we will eat out or cook on our own. At times we will pack food and eat at home. But all meals are our own,” said Selvam.
After a few months, Selvam felt stressed and burdened by the heavy workload.
He told Micheal in March that he wanted to resign and return to India where he had secured a job.
“Micheal said he will speak to the boss and arrange for my departure in May. But it did not happen,” he said.
Selvam said he was not supposed to drive Karpal back to Penang on that fateful day.
He said before departing from Kuala Lumpur on that day, he had been ferrying Karpal and several family members to various destinations.
After they returned home, he said Micheal had advised him to take a good rest and instead drive Karpal’s wife Gurmit Kaur to Penang the next day.
Micheal told Selvam that he would ask Ramkarpal to take the wheels instead.
However, when Karpal asked him why he was not ready, Selvam quickly got dressed and drove the vehicle.
Now, all Selvam wants is to go back to India.

Anwar Ibrahim – The Root of the UMCedel Problem
Anwar Ibrahim – The Root of the UMCedel Problem
by Datuk Huan Cheng Guan
President, Centre for Political Awareness
When news broke out yesterday (http://tinyurl.com/n9pwe38) that Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (Umcedel) director Redzuan Othman has been asked to resign from his position as the survey body's director, how many Malaysians tried to find out for themselves the real reason for this shocking development? Most relied on news and comments gleaned from online portals and went on their merry way condemning the government.
Redzuan and Umcedel became famous when Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak dismissed a survey finding just before the 2013 general election. That poll declared that Pakatan Rakyat’s manifesto had greater traction than BN’s manifesto. Many have accused BN of being sour grapes in its reaction to such unfavourable poll results. Can it really be so simple?
The reality is this. Professor Datuk Dr. Mohammad Redzuan bin Othman is not a social science research expert. His field of expertise is in History and Politics of the Middle East, Islamic Thought and Civilisation and Islam in Malaysia. His academic qualifications as seen HERE (http://tinyurl.com/oy3own7) and his publications HERE (http://tinyurl.com/q3uq47z) show the depth of his interest in his field of expertise. That being the case, why was he chosen too head Umcedel?
To understand that, you need to backtrack to the days of Professor Tan Sri Dr. Ghauth Jasmon, the 10th University of Malaya Vice-Chancellor (2008 to 2013). He and Professor Datuk Dr. Mohammad Redzuan bin Othman are staunch Anwar supporters who have a hidden agenda of making UM staff and students develop anti-government feelings. Redzuan, who was together with Anwar during ABIM days, is the middle man in relations between Anwar and UM pro-Anwar leaders. In fact, Redzuan is the one disclosed how it was the government who had ordered him to cancel the forum featuring Nurul Izzah together with Dato Saifuddin Abdullan. Then, Redzuan unabashedly declared that he would go ahead with the forum anyway – an outward show of non-compliance.
Early this year, Kajang by-election candidate Zaid Ibrahim claimed (http://tinyurl.com/pxzm7zo) that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had a hand in a Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (Umcedel) survey in Kajang which reflected positively on him becoming Menteri Besar of Selangor and the bizarre results showed that the Kajang voters sis not consider the by-election to be a waste of public money.
Yesterday, Housing, Local Government and Urban Well-being Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said UMCedel polls are biased and that he doubts Umcedel’s integrity. Citing questionable sampling methods and sampling sizes as inherent weaknesses, his comments sparked a big twitter debate with many netizens including Liew Chin Tong and Ong Kian Ming.
The truth is this. Far beyond technical weaknesses in the methodology of UMCedel’s polls, those arguments defending Redzuan are flawed because of the links Redzuan and Guath have with Anwar not forgetting their quest to brainwash UM staff and students to rise against the government. Such an insidious agenda surely has deep and dangerous effects on wider society. Besides, to carry out political polls objectively, the researcher/organization must be completely free of any affiliation with any political party.
On that count, UMCedel should never have allowed Redzuan to carry out the poll because of his dark link with Anwar. Undeniably, UMCedel was being used by an irresponsible chief who had no qualms about biting the hand that fed him and to pave the way for GE 13 via agenda-setting tactics in their poll reports so as to spike a further swing towards PR.. As such, UMCedel shaped public opinion via distorted results to brainwash people into voting for Pakatan Rakyat in 2013.
Clearly, there is a malevolent plot by Anwaristas to destabilize the government via Redzuan and other spun lies by online portals which went on to further spin and ampligy the issues raised by UMCedel polls. What our government has done is to nip the problem at its bud before the cancer of lies spreads further. In fact, the government did practise restraint for they moved slowly to pre-empt any backlash from those who perceived their move negatively.
Considering all these factors and the chronological development of events, it is morally right to ask him to resign especially since his research studies are neither valid or reliable.
For now, do not be led by the nose for what you read may not necessarily be the truth, especially if Anwar is involved. The media, most of which are controlled by his cronies, will not hesitate to go to town and paint the government black.
Always look beyond first impressions of news or articles. Test the accuracy and reliability of evidence before you pass judgement and condemn our government.
Can you now see the Anwar link? Spread the news!

Retrial for World's Longest Serving Death Row Inmate
TOKYO (March 27): A Japanese court on Thursday ordered the release and a retrial of an ageing prisoner accused of murder who served on death row for over 30 years, amid doubts about the evidence used to convict him.
Japan and the United States are the only two Group of Seven rich nations to maintain capital punishment and the death penalty has overwhelming support among ordinary Japanese.
Capital punishment is carried out by hanging and prisoners do not know the date until the morning of the day they are executed. For decades, Japan did not even officially announce that capital sentences had been carried out.
Iwao Hakamada, 78 and in declining health, was accused in 1966 of killing four people, including two children, and burning down their house in a case that soon became a cause celebre.
Though he briefly admitted to the killing, he retracted this and pleaded innocent during his trial, but was sentenced to death in 1968. The sentence was upheld by the Japanese Supreme Court in 1980 and Hakamada is believed to be the world's longest-serving death row inmate.
Hakamada's lawyers argued that DNA tests on bloodstained clothing said to be their client's showed that the blood was not his. That prompted presiding judge Hiroaki Murayama to revoke the death sentence and order Hakamada's release pending the retrial, terming the original verdict an injustice.
Hakamado's sister Hideko, who battled for decades to clear the name of her younger brother, now said to be showing signs of dementia, hailed the ruling.
"I want to see him as soon as I can and tell him, 'You really persevered,'" she told a news conference. "I want to tell him that very soon now, he will be free."
Prosecutors, quoted by media, said they would appeal the ruling.
Nearly 86 percent of Japanese feel that keeping the death penalty is "unavoidable," according to a government survey conducted late in 2010, and there has been little public debate. Experts say extensive media coverage of crime and worries about safety are behind the support.
Opponents point to the chance of innocent people being executed given that confessions form the basis of most convictions, with police often accused of using harsh tactics to obtain them.
Eight people were put to death in Japan in 2013, and there are believed to be nearly 130 on death row.

Deputy IGP hits out at ‘inhumane’ Seberang Jaya lawmaker for cop shooting remark
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin today lashed out at the state assemblyman for Seberang Jaya, Dr Afif Bahardin, for his statement on the death of Corporal Raja Aizam Raja Mohd, who was killed in the line of duty, and described the lawmaker as being inhumane.
Dr Afif, had posted a statement in social media that "criminal killing a policeman is not surprising, but when the police who are supposed to uphold the law kill a detainee, that's a problem..."
"Such a statement should not have been made by an elected representative. He is not fit to be an elected representative," Mohd Bakri said at a media conference after the official opening of the Tabuan Jaya Police Station, in Kuching today.
Mohd Bakri said that by raising up such issues, it appeared as though the services provided by policemen were not appreciated.
Dr Afif's had commented on the death of Corporal Raja Aizam, 54, and the injury sustained by his colleague from a patrol car unit following an attack by two men, believed to be Indonesian nationals, in an incident at Taman Sentosa, Klang, early Tuesday morning. – Bernama, March 6, 2014.

Waytha, You're No Hero!
Famous for his fickle decisions, Waythamoorthy lost people’s trust long ago and has no right to call for the resignation of PM Najib . He lost the plot long ago while masquerading as a hero for his community when realistically, his actions show otherwise.
His call for the PM’s resignation and criticisms of the government’s effort to help the Indian community are hopeless insults rolling off its intended targets like water off a duck’s back. The PM has not betrayed anyone but Waythamoorthy who has betrayed his community via his childish attention-seeking tantrum.
What have you, Waythamoorthy, done to earn the respect of Malaysians and the high moral ground to call for the resignation of the Prime Minister of this country? Such delusional thinking does you nothing. You are oblivious to the fact that you have also lost the nambikei of ALL Malaysians because:
1. You did not resign as a gentleman for you did not have the decency to see the PM to talk to him about your grouses or your intended resignation. By that irresponsible and selfish move, you gave up that chance to make a difference in the community and the nation.
2.Eight months ago, you signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the BN, just before the 13th general election last year to champion the Indian community’s agenda. Then you were appointed Senator and deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department to take care of affairs of the Indian community but you readily threw it away when the going seemed tough after some ministers asked you to resign.
3.You have the audacity to accuse the government of ‘dragging its feet’ to help Indians when it is posted for all and sundry to see HERE and THIS LINK how the government has spent, invested and done so much to help the Indian community including:
• Committing RM540 million for infrastructure development in Tamil schools since 2009, including two recent Budget allocations of RM100 million each in 2012 and 2013.
• Allocating a special fund of RM20 million in 2013 for infrastructure development and refurbishment works in 13 fully-aided Tamil schools
• Working with The Community Chest through a public-private partnership with Government to fund 53 Tamil schools a total of RM20.1 million
• Approving 7 new Tamil schools in the country, the first big increase in the number of Tamil schools since 2000
• Establishing the Action Plan for Tamil Schools Unit under the PM’s Department to monitor Tamil school issues and to develop a blueprint to chart a
bright future for Tamil schools in Malaysia
• Cooperating with NGOs with funding from the Federal Government and The Community Chest to set up ICT labs in 38 schools nationwide
Where is your conscience, you make-believe hero? Who has not delivered promises?
It is YOU!
You dare announce to the world about how over the last eight months, you ‘had at least 16 meetings with the prime minister at his office in Putrajaya and how you pushed for the naming of the new unit you want to head. You are nitpicking over a name when the record shows that the government has really gone all out to do much more than before for the Indians. Are you being fair?
In your resignation, why did you not tell Malaysians that under the Janji Ditepati programme, the government has:
• allocated RM50 million for skills training programs targeted at 3,200 Indian youth from plantation backgrounds to increase their employability
• Funding an independent NGO to launch pilot programs and eventually establish a training center that can train and place 1,000 school dropouts
• Establishing Koperasi Suria and provided funding of RM8 million to transform existing Indian sundry shops and automotive workshops, with 69 such transformations already completed
• Establishing the Special Secretariat for the Empowerment of Indian Entrepreneurs (SEED) to assist Indian businesses in obtaining financing and to
• Reserving RM150 million in SME loans for Indian SMEs etc, which Malaysians can read HERE.
Obviously, you have this penchant for stage theatrics and this exit from the Prime Minister’s Office should be your final curtain call. For all the failed projects, unkept promises for which you are infamous, you should retire gracefully instead of continuing your attacks on others. Think of ways to help your brother.
Your hunger for power can never be satiated. When snubbed by Anwar before GE13, you ran to BN who took you in, gave you status and power but when you almost had it all, you threw it all away. But we must thank you for with that, you ended your masquearade, threw away your mask and revealed the real you.
So far, PM Najib has tried his best to keep to his promises and if you had not abandoned a ship sailing happily in the ocean, hundreds of thousands of poor Indians in need could have benefited if only you cared enough to stay and to help. Of course, you did not because it is not in you to be so kind and selfless.
I challenge Waythamoorthy to a debate with the Prime Minister’s department to let the people know the real situation and who is the real traitor and/or liar.
You betrayed yourself, Indians, Malaysians and people who believed in you after you enjoyed benefits bestowed upon you by the government and then you encouraged Indians to vote for BN. Now you doth protest, quit, and proclaim you have been used?
Look at yourself in the mirror. What do you see?
You have left behind hardly anything of value safe for your meaningless theatrical tirades. So you think you were a hero, Waythamoorthy. Only in your dreams.
