Umno president, executive secretary sue Malaysiakini (Update 1)

Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Umno executive secretary Datuk Ab Rauf Yusoh have filed a defamation suit against the company operating the Malaysiakini portal and two of its editors over the publication of two articles last month.

The writ of summons was filed through Messrs Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak last Friday at the High Court registry here.

The media obtained a copy of the writ today. Najib and Ab Rauf (on behalf of Umno) named Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd, Malaysiakini.com editor-in-chief Steven Gan and chief editor Fathi Aris Omar as the first, second and third defendants, respectively.

In their statement of claim, Najib and Ab Rauf claimed that the three defendants had reported, produced and allowed to be published two articles entitled "A case of the PM reaping what he sows" and "How much will Najib spend to keep Terengganu?"

It is claimed that the articles were published on May 14.

They claimed that the articles were carried in the 'Yoursay' column of the www.malaysiakini.com portal by the defendants themselves or their assistants based on comments from the portal's subscribers or users which were grouped into the articles under the major topics.

One of the articles, "A case of the PM reaping what he sows", was related to government policies and hudud while the other, "How much will Najib spend to keep Terengganu?", was on the political situation in Terengganu last month, they said.

Najib, who filed the writ in his personal capacity, and Ab Rauf, on behalf of Umno, claimed that the defendants allowed the publication of the articles on purpose, knowing that they were baseless accusations and untruths.

Najib claimed that the defamatory words had undermined his reputation as a politician, the Umno president and the prime minister.

Besides, the two plaintiffs claimed that the comments implied sarcasm to indicate that Umno was incompetent as a political party and the backbone of the Barisan Nasional. – Bernama

Umno issues show-cause letter to Dyana's mum

Umno issued a show-cause letter to its member Yammy Samat today for backing her daughter Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud's candidacy in the May 31 Teluk Intan by-election under the DAP banner.

"I have written a show cause letter to her asking why she should not be suspended or sacked from Umno for her actions in the Teluk Intan by-election," Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor told journalists in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

"In the letter, I also said we are aware that the candidate (contesting against BN) is her daughter, but the party has its discipline," he added.

Tengku Adnan (left) said the letter was delivered this morning and Yammy, who is a veteran Umno member, has 14 days to response.

After that, whether Yammy responds or not, Tengku Adnan said the matter will be brought to Umno's management before it is forwarded to the Umno supreme council.

"The Umno supreme council will then decide what action will be taken," he said.

Tengku Adnan added Umno will not act arbitrarily against Yammy, unlike opposition parties, which he claimed sack their members at a whim.

Dyana was defeated by Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong in the by-election last Saturday by a razor thin 238-vote majority.

Waiting for police findings on Umno Youth

On a another matter, Tengku Adnan said Umno will wait for police investigations to complete before deciding on action against its Umno Youth members.

He said this in reference to the wing's protests which resulted in the storming of the Penang state assembly and destroying of property at the DAP headquaters in Kuala Lumpur.

"We will wait for police feedback, if it is found they broke party rules or the law, action will be taken against them.

"It all depends on the police report (on the investigation) that we will receive," he said.

Umno Youth had conducted the protests in response to DAP's Seri Delima state assemblyperson RSN Rayer who labelled three Umno members as "celaka" (damned).

Six Umno Youth members were released on bail after being arrested for criminal intimidation during the Kuala Lumpur demonstration.

Penang DCM challenges police over terror network claims (Updated)

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy (pix) has challenged the police to show proof that the three detained Tamil refugees were related to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE).

He said the LTTE no longer exist after losing the civil war in Sri Lanka in 2009.

He pointed out many of the LTTE leaders died during the decades-long war which displaced thousands of Tamils.

"What LTTE threat? These people are refugees, don't harass them," he said in a press conference today.

Three alleged key members of the Sri Lankan LTTE were arrested in several raids in Malaysia.

Authorities claim they have been using the country as a base to support their cause by raising funds from sympathisers worldwide.

Police reportedly seized RM20,176 from the suspects which are said to be donations, propaganda materials and a work permit issued for a non-existent company.

Ramasamy said the three should be charged in a Malaysian court if authorities have enough evidence to prove their involvement in the terror network.

He said detaining the three under the Immigration Act 1959/63 meant they would be deported to Sri Lanka and expressed his fear all may face torture and death there.

“Please give evidence about their terror activities, if there is none, stop harassing them,” he said.

Ramasamy also alleged the crackdown was a plan by the Sri Lankan government to avoid an international investigation into alleged human rights abuses during the civil war.

“This strategy is to invent the threat of LTTE’s revival danger to countries where there are sizeable Tamil populations,” he said and questioned if the more than two million Malaysian Tamils will also face similar scrutiny.

Umno member’s acts will affect BN, says Mah

TELUK INTAN: Teluk Intan Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong says the gatecrashing of the Penang state assembly and the protest outside the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur have affected Chinese support for the Barisan Nasional (BN).

Speaking to Sin Chew Daily during his campaign rounds at the leaning clock tower in Teluk Intan on Saturday morning, Mah said a survey showed that the two incidents have caused some Chinese voters to become alienated.

According to press reports, a group of Umno members barged into the Penang state assembly last Wednesday, demanding an apology from Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer, who allegedly uttered "Umno celaka" during Tuesday's sitting.

On Thursday, a group of Umno Youth members staged a protest in front of the DAP headquarters in Jalan Yew, Kuala Lumpur, to urge the DAP leadership to take action against Rayer.

Mah, who is Gerakan president, said the action of the group that barged into the state assembly is wrong.

The incident will indeed affect the chances of BN in Teluk Intan, which is what DAP wants to see.

"Sometimes, we don't know who these people are but their actions are eventually attributed to BN," he said.

Mah, who had called for a gentleman's fight with his opponent, Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud of DAP, expressed regret that a number of his campaign billboards were defaced.

"On social media, there are people who superimposed my face on (images of) other people at places I have never been.

"Lies about me are also circulated via text messages. This is regrettable."

He said if BN supporters also resort to a smear campaign, it will only lead to heightened confrontation and affect the image of Teluk Intan.

He appealed for a stop to smear campaigns before the situation gets worse.

Meanwhile, a few DAP elected representatives from Penang, who are campaigning for Dyana Sofya, lodged a police report over the appearance of posters in a Malay kampung showing the DAP candidate alongside a bikini-clad actress, with whom she shares a striking facial resemblance.

They said the posters were clearly aimed at smearing the image of Dyana Sofya.

Protests show Umno losing middle ground over Perkasa link, say analysts

Umno’s association with Perkasa could damage the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition's effort to reclaim the middle ground, analysts said in the wake of radical outbursts from the country’s largest political party’s youth wing.

Political analyst Dr Shaharuddin Baharuddin said support from middle-class Malaysians, especially among the Chinese and Indian communities, was sliding further away from the ruling coalition as they see its anchor party's ties with the non-governmental organisation as “inappropriate”.

“If you are only focusing on the ultra-Malay agenda, you definitely cannot go anywhere,” said the associate professor from Universiti Teknologi Mara.

Professor Jayum Jawan, who specialises in politics and government, attributed the erosion of support to Umno’s silence on Perkasa’s activities.

“Perkasa is not helping in the process of national reconciliation that PM Najib promised to bring about after 2013 general election,” the Universiti Putra Malaysia lecturer said, referring to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The second-term PM had mooted "national reconciliation" in the aftermath of the BN's worst-ever electoral showing last year, which he had initially blamed on a "Chinese tsunami" for swinging the tide against the 13-party coalition.

In the months since, Najib has been edging forward at a painfully slow pace on his reconciliation efforts, which have been disrupted frequently by outbursts from groups like Perkasa that have been wading closer to the centre.

Chief executive officer of Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), Wan Saiful Wan Jan, said groups such as Perkasa promoted extreme, divisive messages, and urged the country's largest political party to distance itself from such NGOs as they posed a real danger to Umno and by extension, the BN coalition.

“It is really damaging to Umno because these people are doing things, carrying the name of Umno. It is not only damaging to Umno but also BN as a whole including MCA and MIC.

"It is important for the survival of BN and Umno as a whole that they maintain civility that is a trademark of the Malays,” the think tank chief said.

Wan Saiful applauded Umno's Penang state lawmaker Datuk Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain's spunk for suggesting Umno reject Perkasa outright.

The Teluk Bahang assemblyman had cut into Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's wind-up speech at the state legislative assembly last week, which had been disrupted by protests from Umno Youth members from outside the lawmaking hall.

“I have seen many incidents happened when they are involved so it is best we steer away from them,” Shah Headan said.

But not all analysts believe Umno could be redeemed.

Monash University’s political scientist James Chin went a step further, saying the damage was already done.

"Umno is the main sponsor for Perkasa. There is no way it can detach itself from Perkasa," Chin told The Malay Mail Online.

He observed that Perkasa was created to target a “certain segment of the society” that championed “Ketuanan Melayu” or Malay supremacy, while the prime minister was seen to pursue a separate strategy that embraced the minority groups, in particular the Chinese.

"That hasn't changed but what has changed is that Umno is more right wing. That's why we see the emergence of groups like Isma," he said, referring to vocal Malay-Muslim activist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia by its acronym.

Chin added, “This is a no brainer that Umno is Perkasa and Perkasa is Umno.”

What Sort of CM? Judge for yourself!

CM pokes fun at May 21 Penang state assembly intruders

The Rakyat Post reported:

GEORGETOWN, May 24:

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng put a humorous spin on the May 21 intrusion into the state assembly by a mob, some of whom are believed to be Umno Youth members.

The mob had barged into the state assembly a day after DAP’s Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer had said Umno celaka (damn Umno).

Speaking at Pakatan Rakyat’s “Mega Ceramah” (Mega Speeches) in Han Chiang High School hall on Friday night, Lim claimed that the intruders had misjudged the seating arrangements in the state assembly hall.

“They entered the hall. They threw the flag onto the ground. They put their feet on the Speaker’s table,” Lim alleged in Bahasa Malaysia as the crowd booed disapprovingly.

“Then they went to look for my seat, but they did not know where I was sitting. They only knew I sit at the front, but they didn’t know if I was sitting on the left or on the right.

“They were looking for my bag. But I was not at the state assembly that day, so my bag was not there either.

“They saw a bag at a seat on the left. They took it and flung it along the hall.

“But I sit on the right. The bag they threw belonged to the leader of the Penang opposition, an Umno leader’s bag,” claimed Lim as the crowd burst into laughter.

“As Malays would say; padan muka! (in your face)” said Lim, who is also the DAP secretary-general.
However, he nonetheless called on the authorities to take stern action against the intruders.

Lim said the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General should charge them and ensure that the 12 people who were detained on May 21, are jailed.

He said that although those involved had claimed to be from Penang, Lim said the state government would not recognise them as Penangites as their actions were shameful.

Lim also called on voters to cast their ballots on Sunday for his party’s candidate in the Bukit Gelugor by-election, Ramkarpal Singh.

Many other speakers made the same call during the ceramah, claiming that a bigger majority would send a message to Barisan Nasional and create momentum for the Teluk Intan by-election next week.

Among the other prominent speakers were PR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, as well as Ramkarpal himself who also sent words of support to DAP’s candidate there, Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.

“Dyana, tell yourself ‘I am Karpal Singh’,” said Ramkarpal, who predicted that the 27 year-old Malay female candidate would face harsher criticism from Barisan Nasional in the days running up to Teluk Intan’s polls.

(CT: That seems to be the favourite line from Ramkarpal Singh! Nothing else to say kah?)

However, Parit Buntar MP Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa of PAS may have received just as many laughs and cheers as any of the other PR leaders.

Mujahid had dubbed himself the temporary master of ceremonies (MC) and took over the introductions of most of the PR leaders as they coincidentally entered the school hall during his speech.

“The real MC has given me five extra minutes to talk since I’ve done such a good job with the introductions,” joked Mujahid near the end of his speech which mostly focused on how Umno’s behaviour did not reflect the behaviour of all Malays

Shahrir tells Dyana to understand DAP’s secular stance

JOHOR BARU, May 21:
DAP candidate for the Teluk Intan parliamentary constituency Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has been asked to fully understand the DAP’s fight in defending the policy of secularism.

In making the call, Johor Baru Umno division chief Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said he was shocked when Dyana Sofya was reported to have declared that, if elected, she would oppose the hudud bills that PAS had proposed to table in Parliament.

The 27-year-old candidate said she was opposed to hudud law in accordance with the party line, or the DAP’s fight.

“Secularism is a concept whereby the government or any other entity exists in separation from religion or religious belief. How did the party come to have such a party line when it is secular?” asked Shahrir at a media conference at the Johor Baru Umno division office today.

He said the DAP, as a party which defended secularism, must allow its Muslim leaders and representatives to make their own stand as Muslims.

While respecting Dyana Sofya’s decision to join the DAP, Umno veteran Shahrir said it was not something weird even though she was brought up in a family which supported the Umno cause.

“The situation is now very open and there should be no surprise when family members, such as mine, hold different political views.

“My sister was influenced by socialism when studying in the United Kingdom in the 60′s.

“When studying in Universiti Malaya, I was influenced by Umno which was fighting for the New Economic Policy, while my brother (Khalid — Pas Member of Parliament for Shah Alam) supported PAS after being influenced by the Islamic Revolution while studying in the UK.”

Shahrir also expressed confidence that BN candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong was capable of wresting the Teluk Intan seat from the Opposition.

“Mah still has a chance of winning because he has continued to provide good service to the people there despite losing in 2013.

“Can the DAP provide such service?”

Angry mob breaks gate at Penang legislative building

GEORGE TOWN, May 21:
A group of angry Umno members and supporters broke the gate of the State Legislative building here in protest over words uttered by Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer.

The incident came about following Rayer’s speech during the third day of the state assembly yesterday when he had allegedly uttered the word “celaka” against Umno and Malays for having organised a rally recently to empower Muslims and Malays in the state.

Rayer had alleged uttered: “Umno celaka! Reezal Merican celaka! Melayu2 yg sertai himpunan Mendaulatkan Islam & Mempertahankan Melayu di Bandar Sunway Celaka!” which sparked outrage among Umno members.

At about 2pm when the state assembly sitting was about to commence after the lunch break, a group of about 100 protesters arrived outside the building and started shouting and demanding to see Rayer.

They then broke open the gate of the state legislative assembly building and three of them managed to barge in to confront Rayer, but the latter was nowhere around.

George Town chief district police officer Asst Comm Mior Faridalatrash Wahid arrived shortly after with a team of police from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and spoke to the group representative Jasmin Noordin, who is the Penang Umno Youth deputy chief.

Three representatives from the group were allowed in to hold a meeting with state DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow and a few other state  leaders and excos.

Meanwhile, MP Bayan Baru Sim Tze Tzin said he was shocked and outraged over the incident, adding that this had never happened before in Parliament’s history in Malaysia.

“I condemn this outrageous act. I demand Umno to take full responsible. Umno must apologise publicly to all Malaysians and sack those Umno leaders. I saw a few Umno Bayan Baru leaders in their midst.

“Malaysians cannot be cowed by mob rule. The State Assembly is sacrosanct. State assemblymen and women are representatives elected by voters through democratic process. It is the integrity of parliamentary democracy at risk.

“I urge the police to prosecute these perpetrators for threatening parliamentary democracy under Sosma, section 124 C.”
