KUALA LUMPUR: There was heavy traffic congestion around the capital city's landmark, Dataran Merdeka, and nearby areas when hundreds of protesters against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) marched to the square and gathered around it.
The protest gathering there was scheduled to start at 2pm.
Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman nearby was crowded with protesters, mostly wearing red and yellow, as they walked towards Dataran Merdeka, thus disrupting the traffic flow for other road users.
Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin heading towards Dataran Merdeka was also congested due to the protest participants' cars parked haphazardly along the roadside.
Some participants were seen converging in Jalan Raja next to Dataran Merdeka at 1.15pm.
Traffic congestion in the affected area was also made worse by participants gathering on the road while being provocative by shouting anti-government slogans, honking, and jeering and singing using loud hailers.
Kuala Lumpur traffic police chief, ACP Rusli Mohd Noor when contacted, said the traffic situation was still under control but police were closely watching out for any untoward incident.
He said policemen were stationed at various spots to control traffic flow. - BERNAMA

Anti-GST rally participants defy police
Some participants of the Anti-Goods and Service Tax (GST) rally, who begun gathering at five locations in the capital, have defied the police's advice by taking along children and carrying placards.
The thinly stretched crowd started gathering as early as 9.30am outside the Sogo shopping complex, the National Mosque, KLCC, Kampung Baru, and Dataran Maybank.
Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the participants were allowed to gather around Merdeka Square but barred from entering the field and podium as the premises was being upgraded.
They are also not allowed to take along children, loud hailers, placards, banners, and weapons as the actions violated the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, he added.
Some participants were seen displaying anti-GST placards and banners denouncing the GST and the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) which Malaysia has yet to ratify.
Traffic in the capital is still under control and there was no road closure until 11am, said a Kuala Lumpur traffic police spokesman.
Policemen and Kuala Lumpur City Hall enforcement personnel are manning Dataran Merdeka, the focal point of the rally where the participants are expected to assemble between 2pm and 5pm. – Bernama
