THE decision to retain the Sedition Act should be applauded by all, says former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.
“The decision is right as it protects all citizens from racial disharmony, safeguards the royal institution and the social contract,” he told the New Straits Times yesterday.
He said matters agreed upon by all races had to be protected as “this was crucial to prevent security breaches and public disorder”.
Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan said anarchy could reign in the country if the Sedition Act was repealed.
Describing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s announcement that the act would be retained and strengthened as timely and laudable, he said the legislation was the last line of defence for the government to ban any act, speech or publication that jeopardises harmony or the royal institution.
He said the act would serve to deter people from inciting hateful behaviour between different races and religions, or question the special position of the ethnic Malay majority as well as cement Sabah and Sarawak position as Malaysian states.
“To remove this act would be akin to giving citizens the free reign to inflict damage and cause disunity,” he said yesterday.
Huan said since the last two general elections, the opposition had been preaching a gospel of hatred, which had corroded public opinion and created hostility towards the ruling government.
“These reasons, and the many unfortunate events that occurred in the last two years, must have spurred the prime minister to bolster the Sedition Act, even adding a special clause to protect the sanctity of Islam and protecting other religions from being insulted.”
Huan said a second clause would also make it illegal to call for the secession of Sabah and Sarawak.
Huan said he disagreed with DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang’’s accusation that Najib had buckled under pressure to make a U-turn on the act.
“It took true grit for our prime minister to go against public opinion before the Umno General Assembly. Making such a stand showed he was taking the bull by the horns when dealing with subversive elements, which have been invoking anti-establishment sentiments to the highest degree.
“It is not a question of bypassing the cabinet, as alleged by some. Rather, it is getting the support of Umno members so that he will have the mandate to bring it up in Parliament.
“The motive is sincere as the prime minister stated clearly that enforcement of the act would be fair to ensure a more stable, peaceful and harmonious nation for all.”

How Much Longer Do Penangites Have to Suffer?
As long as the Penang state government continues in their self-imposed inertia in implementing the Penang Island Local Plan (which has been on hold since 2008), there will be no end to the incessant debate as to whether it is climatic change and/or overdevelopment that causes flooding in Penang.
Lame denials by the state government or finger pointing do nothing for the prestige of this island.
This is what happened this morning in Relau, Penang, after a short downpour.
When the state government waffles around dishing out excuses and hides behind masks, citizens will never be happy with an elected government that refrains from enforcing the local plan without which there can be no clear guidelines and specifications for development. In other words, without implementing the Penang Island Local Plan, it has been a free-for-all for developers can enjoy and exploit the freedom and benefit of building their projects at their whims and fancies, including at environmentally sensitive locations. No one would know. And, it would be very difficult to take action.
It is incredulous that against this backdrop, Chow Kon Yeow can say the state government is working on completing the state drainage and irrigation masterplan to better tackle the flood issue. But what about the Local Plan that has greater and far reaching consequences for the betterment of the state?
Is that the reason why the state government is so unwilling and nonchalant about implementing the Penang Island Local Plan and enforcing integrated development?
If this continues, Penangites will continue to pay the price of the state government’s nonchalance and blatant disregard of Penangites’ welfare.
So, ubah lah – development ala LGE or a people-centric development with maximum accountability.

Freedom and Independence: The sole, exclusive right of America only?
It has been rather a routine for the foreign powers-that-be, namely the Anglo-American superpowers to dictate and decide on foreign policies in the international arena. Top of the most important in their list is of course, freedom, justice and democracy whereby they are so proud of propagating throughout the world, in the pretext of liberalizing “third world countries” from the “clutches of tyranny, oppression and autocracy.”
In this aspect, the Malaysian government is also being targeted for not providing “enough justice support system” to our firebrand Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim. The US Embassy has issued a statement that implies democracy is under threat in Malaysia with the coming verdict of the PKR de facto leader, assumed to be “guilty” even before the courts announce the result of the deliberation of the appeal. Malaysia is painted as being a “black democracy” with court judges being easily bribed and being puppets of the executive, so they say.
However, time and again, the many court decisions which have been upheld, have shown results that are not only favourable to the ruling government but also sided with the opposition leaders. Courts have awarded payments and remunerations to countless opposition leaders who were found to be “victimized”.
Then again, is it fair to accuse the Federal Government of having a hand in manipulating these decisions as well? Meaning to say, if Barisan Nasional leaders win the suit, then the courts are biased. But if Pakatan Rakyat leaders win the suit, can the courts be equally biased too? Or only Pakatan cases are allowed to win in courts and all cases involving Barisan Nasional must lose, only then will there be fairness and justice in the eyes of our Big Brothers, the United States, United Kingdom and their deputy sheriff in Asia, i.e. Australia? The Xenophon intervention is another typical example of “holier than thou” attitude which speaks of arrogance and ignorance of the legal system in Malaysia, which actually is an inherited system of the British colonial rule, including the Sedition Act 1948. Oh by the way, Malaya did not even gain independence yet at that time so how could it be a Malaysian law in the post-independence era? Do these people even know their history?
The Anwar saga is the most glaring case of all. No doubt, Anwar is seen as an “icon” and to a certain extent the “champion of democracy”, some even equating him with Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar and Jose Rizal of the Philippines. But make no mistake, Anwar is no freedom fighter for he once was part of the Mahathir administration in the 90s, the so-called dark, gloomy, oppressive and dictatorial rule of the iron fist doctor during his 22 years of power, of which surprisingly after the “master” sacked the “servant”, it was suddenly evident that there needs to be an uprising in the Malaysian streets to overthrow the legitimate, elected government of the day. All of a sudden, all the foreign media are zoomed in and focused on Kuala Lumpur. The shouts of “Reformasi” was supported by Al-Gore, the former Vice-President of the United States when he came to Malaysia for a summit. Imagine coming to a country upon being invited as a deputy head of state, only to give a speech to encourage the people to rise and overthrow the legally elected government of the day, of which the same “first-past-the-post system” was used by the UK electoral system until this very day.
What a hypocrite!
America should stop poking its nose into other nations’ affairs. Do not be a busy-body, trying to act smart and teach a duck how to swim. Please mind your own business. Kindly respect the International Charter of the United Nations. All nations are granted dignity and sovereignty in managing their own affairs and running of their countries. Surely you do not like other people to interfere in your internal affairs and advise the President of the United States to do this and that.
Needless to say, the foreign media, journalists, editors and propagandists are also responsible for their biased report on Malaysia. Their glorification of Anwar and bad-mouthing of Najib never stops, as if everything Anwar dictates is the whole truth and nothing but the truth while whatever that comes out from Najib’s mouth are nothing but a pack of lies. These bunch of retards will never have any good thing to say about the tremendous progress and growth that Malaysia has achieved for the past few decades. True enough, their mentality is set to ABU: Anything But Umno. They just want to kick out BN/Umno by whatever means possible and replace the current government with their stooge and hopefully can then decide on the foreign policy of this country, to be more pro-America of course.
It is evident and obvious that the citizens of Malaysia must open their eyes and be wary of these insidious, hidden, clandestine plots by foreign agents in disrupting, dismantling and destroying what we have built for the past 57 years. We must not be fooled by these self-serving opportunists who will stop at nothing just to see Malaysia chaotic so as to justify foreign intervention and involvement.
May I remind the American Government regarding the The Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration states that the United States is and has the right to be “free and independent.” The Declaration is based on the right of self-government inherent in the American people, and on their need to form a government that would protect their inalienable rights. In this same regard, what makes Malaysia so different from America?
We too have the right to be “free and independent”.

Senators to CM: Save Kg Siam
Two BN appointed senators have urged Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng intervene to save the Siamese village in Pulau Tikus as land matters are under the state’s jurisdiction.
Senator Boon Som Inong from Kedah added the Lim could help by bringing the issue to the state cabinet to find a ‘win-win’ situation for the residents.
"Please gazette the area as a heritage village as the priority is to preserve it. If that can’t be done, at least offer the residents a proper compensation package," Boon said after visiting the site today.
"They were offered only RM30,000 in compensation. What can you buy with that? Are they going to sleep on the streets?
"I am here not for political reasons but to find a solution," said Boon whose senatorship was at the recommendation of Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Senator cum Kelantan Gerakan chairperson Ng Chiang Chin said that whoever takes over the land should resolve the plight of the residents on humanitarian grounds and not look at it from the the commercial perspective alone.
"In Kelantan, we also take care of the Siamese community and thus we are concerned about what happens here. We hope to help this minority community regain its losses," he added.
'Value the residents'
Malaysian Siamese Association president Osot Prayun also urged the authorities to value the residents here.
"We seek the mercy of the state to look after their wellbeing," he said.
The residents whose history goes back six generations, have been issued eviction notices by the developer who is planning to build a hotel on the 0.64ha land.
To make way for the hotel, seven shops and 10 wooden houses would have to be demolished.
Use of the land had been converted from cultural to commercial use in 1996.
The plot was originally bequeathed to the Burmese and Siamese communities by East India Company on behalf of Queen Victoria in 1845.
Reasonable compensation
Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan.who accompanied the trio today, claimed the developer has many projects.
"I am sure they are good friends with the state government and can discuss the matter with them.
"This is not a case of you help me, I help you, but involves everyone's interests," he said.
He suggested that Lim work out a reasonable compensation package like Taman Buah Pala where the residents were given replacement units worth about RM600,000 each.
Huan said Lim could also seek the aid of the federal government to help the community.

Penang critic claims state security assaulted him
Ong Eu Soon, a vocal critic of the Pakatan Rakyat government, claimed he was physically assaulted by several men wearing the state’s voluntary patrol unit uniforms in Farlim, Penang, last night.
Ong said the attack took place about 10.45pm while he was attending a Chinese temple dinner held in front of the Farlim market.
“Suddenly, several men wearing the voluntary patrol unit (PPS, Pasukan Patrol Sukarela) approached me and attacked me with their helmets,” Ong said in a police report he lodged at the Bandar Baru police station.
The report was received by Corporal Ravesh Nair Prabagaran at 11.05pm last night.
“I was kicked and punched, there are bruises on my body, my eyes are swollen and my spectacles were broken,” he added.
“It was the public who eventually came between us and stopped their attacks,” said Ong, 51, without specifying how many men attacked him.
Ong immediately lodged a report and urged the police to probe the matter thoroughly and act promptly on his aggressors.
PCM comes to aid
Meanwhile, Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-chairperson Huan Cheng Guan, who is assisting Ong in the matter, said the state government should disband the PPS if it could not control the team.
“How come a uniform unit beats people up? I urge police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi and the Home Ministry to look into this matter seriously,” Huan (right) told Malaysiakini.
Ong is known for questioning the state government on environmental and development issues, including reclamation exercises, hill slope development, the state’s transportation policies and traffic woes and the feasibility study of the proposed RM3.6 billion undersea tunnel that will link the island to Butterworth.

DAP Paya Terubong assemblyperson Yeoh Soon Hin, who looks after the constituency where the incident took place, is expected to hold a press conference on the matter.
When contacted, Northeast district police deputy chief Supt Rahman Abdul said nobody has been arrested yet.
“We are looking for these unidentified men. The victim also did not specify how many were involved in attacking him,” Rahman said.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

The forgotten and forsaken driver
In the midst of deep mourning and intense sorrow after two lives were lost in a tragic road accident, one man was forgotten and forsaken.
Judged even before he was tried in court, C. Selvam from India was left high and dry in Taiping Prison after he was charged with reckless driving and causing the deaths of Karpal Singh and his assistant Michael Cornelius.
Languishing in prison where no one visited him or bothered to post his bail, he was consumed with sadness until Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) vice president Huan Cheng Guan did so on humanitarian grounds.
Kindness and compassion costs nothing. It is simply a matter of having the will to do it.
DAP, on the other hand, has been defensive of its failure to help Selvam.
According to its Legal Bureau chief, Gobind Singh Deo, DAP was unable to offer legal assistance to Selvam because the party is representing the families of Karpal and two others.
While that is true, I cannot fathom why it is wrong, impossible, even immoral for DAP or the families of the victims to at least visit Selvam, a man who faithfully served the late Karpal till his demise.
Was it completely impossible to arrange for legal aid from PKR or PAS?
Well, it appears that DAP uses a selective process when it comes to offering gestures of goodwill.
Just look at how Lim Kit Siang jumped at the opportunity to milk free publicity and political mileage by offering free legal service (even though she did not ask for it) to a a certain well-off but rude woman who assaulted an old man on the road.
How can anyone leave a faithful and loyal employee in the lurch to suffer in prison for almost a month with the lame excuse that it would be unethical to legally assist him?
There are other alternatives, but none was explored by DAP.
Such cold-heartedness clearly indicates that DAP has already judged Selvam and passed the verdict of guilty although he has yet to be tried in court.
Selvam was employed by the late Karpal’s family. If the court finds him guilty, then the family members themselves can be tried for the driver’s negligence. Clearly, they have chosen not to acknowledge this.
After the tragic accident, few if any interviewed Selvam.
The news focus was first on the demise of Karpal Singh, and then it switched to the lorry driver, who was found to be high on drugs and who switched lanes without flashing his indicator.
Later, the Attorney-General chose to charge Selvam for reckless driving and, from then onwards, the loyal driver was forsaken and forgotten.
Well, it’s good to know that there are angels among us after all. Not only did Huan post bail for the driver, he also took him for a good KFC meal and followed that with a trip to Tesco.
Huan bought the driver new clothing, toiletries and a luggage bag. He also bought him a handphone and all the neccesary accessories so Selvam could get in touch with his family in India.
Selvam’s mother also spoke to Huan and cried throughout the telephone conversation.
Touched by his kindness, Selvam thanked Huan from his heart and promised he would never forget his gestures.
Huan also made arrangements for accommodation for Selvam and helped him renew his visa.
Here is a man of compassion, a man who saw another man’s plight and decided to help, even to the extent of staying on in Kampar until Selvam had engaged a lawyer to defend him.
Syabas!
Everyone deserves kindness and justice, both of which can be offered freely if one chooses to do so.
The burning question is why DAP chose to forsake Selvam by using legalities?
If DAP can be cold and callous even towards an employee of its former chairman, can the party be expected to fulfil the roles and responsibilities of governance with care and compassion?

Such cold-heartedness clearly indicates that DAP has already judged Selvam and passed the verdict of guilty although he has yet to be tried in court.
Selvam was employed by the late Karpal’s family. If the court finds him guilty, then the family members themselves can be tried for the driver’s negligence. Clearly, they have chosen not to acknowledge this.
After the tragic accident, few if any interviewed Selvam.
The news focus was first on the demise of Karpal Singh, and then it switched to the lorry driver, who was found to be high on drugs and who switched lanes without flashing his indicator.
Later, the Attorney-General chose to charge Selvam for reckless driving and, from then onwards, the loyal driver was forsaken and forgotten.
Well, it’s good to know that there are angels among us after all. Not only did Huan post bail for the driver, he also took him for a good KFC meal and followed that with a trip to Tesco.
Huan bought the driver new clothing, toiletries and a luggage bag. He also bought him a handphone and all the neccesary accessories so Selvam could get in touch with his family in India.
Selvam’s mother also spoke to Huan and cried throughout the telephone conversation.
Touched by his kindness, Selvam thanked Huan from his heart and promised he would never forget his gestures.
Huan also made arrangements for accommodation for Selvam and helped him renew his visa.
Here is a man of compassion, a man who saw another man’s plight and decided to help, even to the extent of staying on in Kampar until Selvam had engaged a lawyer to defend him.

Everyone deserves kindness and justice, both of which can be offered freely if one chooses to do so.
The burning question is why DAP chose to forsake Selvam by using legalities?
If DAP can be cold and callous even towards an employee of its former chairman, can the party be expected to fulfil the roles and responsibilities of governance with care and compassion?

Shocking Report: Karpal's Driver Betrayed, Abandoned and Neglected

GEORGE TOWN: The former driver of the late Karpal Singh, C Selvam, 27, feels hollow, abandoned and betrayed by his employer’s family after being left to languish in Taiping prison for more than a month.
Although Selvam is out on bail, thanks to the timely intervention of Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan, the Indian national has been struggling to pull himself together, crying and grieving in jail pending trial.
Selvam did not know anyone in Malaysia except his employer Karpal and his family and never thought for a moment he would be abandoned and left to rot in a “foreign” jail.
During his remand, he prayed daily for Karpal’s family to bail him out but help never came.
He recalled that not a single member of Karpal’s family visited him in Taiping prison.
No representatives from the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur visited Selvam, who is from Velore in Tamil Nadu, India.
Selvam claimed that his belongings, last left in Karpal’s home in Kuala Lumpur, were never returned to him.
When he was finally bailed out, Selvam was shocked to find out that he was saved by an unknown “Chinese Datuk.”
He is now grateful to Huan and the Datuk, whom he had never met before, for bailing him out.
Huan posted bail of RM5,000 last Monday and Selvam was released the next day.
“I was crying in jail every day, thinking of my family in India, my late boss and my friend Micheal Cornelius.
When I was told someone posted bail for me, I thought it was Karpal’s family.”
“I was shocked when I found out it was a Chinese Datuk. I felt betrayed, abandoned and hollow.
“When I met Huan at the courthouse in Kampar, I thanked him for taking me out of prison.
“He is like a god to me now,” said a relieved Selvam.
Huan bought new clothes for Selvam and a mobile phone for him to contact his parents and two younger siblings in India.
Selvam will be under Huan’s care pending his case in Kampar.
Huan has sought the help of Gerakan’s legal and human rights national bureau chairman Baljit Singh to provide legal aid for Selvam.
Selvam was charged with dangerous and reckless driving on July 9 under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM5,000 which he could not afford.
The charge carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or RM20,000 fine or both, upon conviction.
The case management is on Sept 5.
Selvam was driving Karpal’s Toyota Alphard when it collided with a lorry on the North-South Expressway near Kampar on April 17.
The accident killed Karpal, 74, and his aide Michael, 39, on the spot.
Karpal’s Indonesian maid Selfiana Rengga, 26, who was also in the vehicle was seriously injured but has since recovered.
Selvam and Karpal’s third son Ramkarpal Singh escaped with minor injuries.
After the accident, Selvam said he was sent on the same day by a DAP politician to stay with a relative of Karpal in Ipoh pending police investigation.
“The family took good care of me,” said Selvam, adding that he only saw Karpal’s daughter Sangeet Kaur twice during his stay there.
Selvam said he was dropped off at the Kampar police station by the relative’s driver on July 9.
Police took him to the court to be charged.
“I was left all alone, stranded and devastated not knowing why I was charged,” he said.
Selvam became Karpal’s employee on Sept 27 2013 to provide for his poor family in India.
“I told my parents that I would be working for a famous political and legal family,” he said.
Selvam said he was not supposed to drive Karpal back to Penang on that fateful day. However, when Karpal asked him why he was not ready, Selvam quickly got dressed and drove the vehicle.
At first, Selvam was hired to work as an assistant to Micheal for RM1,500 monthly to provide nursing care for Karpal.
“Micheal told me it would be advantageous if I had a driving licence,” he said.
However, Selvam claimed he was used as a driver, office boy and gardener, waking up before 6am and sleeping after midnight daily.
Selvam and Micheal stayed in Karpal’s home in Kuala Lumpur most of the time and travelled with the politician everywhere, including Penang, mostly during the wee hours.
Besides being a family driver, Selvam helped Micheal to care for Karpal, carry legal documents, as well as cleaning the garden and watering the plants.
He and Micheal were not provided any meals although they were provided accommodation in Karpal’s house.
“Sometimes we will eat out or cook on our own. At times we will pack food and eat at home. But all meals are our own,” said Selvam.
After a few months, Selvam felt stressed and burdened by the heavy workload.
He told Micheal in March that he wanted to resign and return to India where he had secured a job.
“Micheal said he will speak to the boss and arrange for my departure in May. But it did not happen,” he said.
Selvam said he was not supposed to drive Karpal back to Penang on that fateful day.
He said before departing from Kuala Lumpur on that day, he had been ferrying Karpal and several family members to various destinations.
After they returned home, he said Micheal had advised him to take a good rest and instead drive Karpal’s wife Gurmit Kaur to Penang the next day.
Micheal told Selvam that he would ask Ramkarpal to take the wheels instead.
However, when Karpal asked him why he was not ready, Selvam quickly got dressed and drove the vehicle.
Now, all Selvam wants is to go back to India.

PCM's Huan bails out Karpal's jailed driver
Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) vice-president Huan Cheng Guan today posted bail for C Selvam, the driver of the late former DAP chairperson Karpal Singh, who has spent almost a month in prison. Huan posted a RM5,000 bail for Selvam, who is being charged with reckless driving, at a magistrate's court in Kampar, Perak, this morning, says a Harian Metro Online report.
The report said Huan arrived in court at 9.30am and was escorted by police to a nearby bank to get a bank draft for RM5,000.
Selvam is expected to be released from Taiping Prison tomorrow morning.
Karpal Singh, who was Bukit Gelugor MP, was on April 17, killed in a road accident, along with his assistant Michael Cornelius.
Selvam was driving at that time.
Subsequently, Selvam was on July 9 charged with dangerous and reckless driving, resulting in the deaths.
He was allowed bail but went to prison as no one posted the required RM5,000.
DAP's political opponents have since jumped on this matter and accused Karpal's family of abandoning Selvam.
Both Gerakan and MIC had also offered to assist Selvam.

Huan Files Election Petition against DAP over Alleged Wrongdoings
GEORGE TOWN: Parti Cinta Malaysia will file an election petition against the DAP for alleged offences committed during the Bukit Gelugor by-election.
Its vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan, who lost in the four-cornered fight won by DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh, said he had evidence of wrongdoings committed by DAP on polling day.
Huan said he had already lodged a report with the Election Commission and that he would file a petition in the High Court within 21 days of results being gazetted. The court would then be required to hear and settle the petition within six months from the date of filing.
“I am not doing this because I am sore over the results. I have video clips and proof to show that the DAP broke all rules and regulations in this by-election,” he said at a press conference at the party’s premises in Air Itam, Monday.
“They claim their voluntary patrol unit members were not canvassing for votes on polling day, but I have video clips as proof,” he added.
Huan went on to claim that he had photographic evidence of a poster of Ramkarpal having been put up in front of a school, some 10m away from a polling station in defiance of the rule that no campaign material be placed within a 50m radius.
The PCM vice-president further questioned the state government for mobilising all its elected representatives, including state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh, to be stationed outside polling stations.
“Didn’t they have better things to do? These are the elected representatives of the people,” he said.
Huan secured 3,583 votes in the by-election won by Ramkarpal, who polled 41,242 and won by a whopping majority of 37,659 votes.
Two independent candidates, Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abd Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zan, obtained 799 and 225 votes respectively.
Huan, Mohamed Nabi Bux and Abu Backer Sidek lost their RM10,000 deposit after failing to secure one-eighth or 12.5% of the total votes.

He alleged DAP had campaigned within the polling stations on Sunday, brandishing pictures as proof.
“I have a lot of pictures and video of DAP leaders campaigning inside the polling stations.”
“They even openly set up a campaigning booth complete with DAP posters and Ramkarpal Singh Deo's posters not more than 10m from a polling station,” he alleged while holding up photos of the booth.
According to the Elections Offenses Act, all candidates amd parties are not allowed to set up booths closer than 50m from polling stations on polling day.
Huan was in a four cornered fight with DAP's Ramkarpal Singh Deo and two independent candidates Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan.
DAP retained the parliamentary seat with a 37,659 vote majority.
“I am not doing this because I'm dissatisfied that I lost but DAP broke the regulations so the by-election was not conducted fairly,” Huan said.
The former Gerakan leader said he was satisfied with his results in the by-election.
“I got almost double the votes as compared to 1,801 votes I got when I contested for Batu Kawan parliamentary seat in last year's general election,” he said.
Huan was formerly the Batu Kawan MP and a Gerakan member.
Huan and the other two independent candidates lost their RM15,000 deposit each in the by-election.
All candidates are required to pay a deposit of RM15,000 to the Election Commission to contest for a parliamentary seat in an election.
They can only get back their deposit if they managed to garner one eighth or 12 per cent of the total votes cast.
The Bukit Gelugor seat was vacated after the late MP Karpal Singh was killed in a car crash last month.

Huan sees ‘victory’ in Bkt Gelugor humbling
GEORGE TOWN: Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) vice-president Huan Cheng Guan sees a victory in his Bukit Gelugor by-election defeat.
He said the reduced majority obtained by DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh Deo was a ‘victory’ to him since the DAP wanted to match or better the late Karpal Singh’s majority win in the 2013 general election.
The late Karpal polled 55,839 votes to score a stunning majority victory of 41,778 votes against BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam, who garnered 14,061 votes in the 13th general election.
Electoral debutant Ramkarpal polled 41,242 votes to become Bukit Gelugor MP with a majority of 37,659 votes, falling short by 4,119 votes to his late father’s majority.
Huan, who got 3,583 votes, recalled that he pleaded to voters to save his RM10,000 election deposit on nomination day but fell short of some 2,000 votes.
He said his loss of deposit showed that he was not an Umno or Barisan Nasional proxy as accused by the DAP.
“If Umno has supported me, I would not have lost my deposit,” Huan told a post-election press conference at his Air Itam election operations centre late yesterday.

Independent candidates Nabi Bux Mohamed Nabi Abd Sathar, 63, got 799 votes and lawyer Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan, 46, garnered 225 votes in the four-cornered by-election battle.
The duo also lost their election deposits.
DAP ‘hit below the belt
Huan pointed out PCM was a small party that faced mighty DAP machinery and Pakatan Rakyat heavyweights.
He said DAP carried out an unethical and “hit below the belt” campaign tactic to smear his reputation, largely through the social media.
“Some pro-Pakatan online portals were whacking me from day one,” Huan said.
He accused Pakatan campaigners of abusing power and misusing their positions, like using the Election Commission’s logo in their polling booths and party volunteer patrol squad (PPS) to woo voters.
He said the Pakatan campaigners had also openly campaigned in prohibited areas near polling stations during balloting process.
He has already lodged reports to the EC and police on the issues.
“We have all the proofs. We urge the EC to investigate my complaints thoroughly,” said Huan, adding that DAP should learn to win with honour.
He however, congratulated Ramkarpal for his victory and hoped that the new MP would take care of his constituents.
“I wish to thank all my campaigners, media and voters for their support,” said Huan.
This will be third straight electoral defeat for Huan.
Previously he had lost in Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency in 2013 and Bukit Tambun state seat in 2008.
“Maybe I will create a record in losing elections,” he joked.
He said the reduced majority obtained by DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh Deo was a ‘victory’ to him since the DAP wanted to match or better the late Karpal Singh’s majority win in the 2013 general election.
The late Karpal polled 55,839 votes to score a stunning majority victory of 41,778 votes against BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam, who garnered 14,061 votes in the 13th general election.
Electoral debutant Ramkarpal polled 41,242 votes to become Bukit Gelugor MP with a majority of 37,659 votes, falling short by 4,119 votes to his late father’s majority.
Huan, who got 3,583 votes, recalled that he pleaded to voters to save his RM10,000 election deposit on nomination day but fell short of some 2,000 votes.
He said his loss of deposit showed that he was not an Umno or Barisan Nasional proxy as accused by the DAP.
“If Umno has supported me, I would not have lost my deposit,” Huan told a post-election press conference at his Air Itam election operations centre late yesterday.
Bukit Gelugor by-election was held following the death of incumbent MP and Ramkarpal’s father Karpal in a fatal highway accident near Kampar, Perak on April 17.

BUKIT GELUGOR Despite losing his deposit, PCM vice-president Huan Cheng Guan believes his performance in the Bukit Gelugor by-election is good enough claiming he has managed reduce DAP's winning majority.
Although he lost his deposit, Huan is also happy to have received 3,583 votes as it is close to double that which he garnered in Batu Kawan, where he contested in the 13th general election.
"I hope my supporters will not be upset because this is merely an ordinary battle, it is not a war. Although I lost, but I was able to bring down DAP's majority.
"During nomination, (Ramkarpal Singh, left) said (he) wanted to achieve a bigger majority compared to his father, the late Karpal Singh who garnered more than 41,000 majority votes.
“But since he is only able to secure a majority of 37,000-plus, please don't spin or give excuses like low turnout,” he said at a press conference.
Ramkarpal won with a majority of 37,659 votes, having obtained a whopping 89 percent of votes cast.
His late father, Karpal, won with a majority of 41, 778 votes (79 percent of votes cast).
Huan added that while he was 2,000 votes shy of his target of retaining his deposit, he is still happy as PCM is a tiny party compared to heavyweight Pakatan Rakyat parties.
"Whereas, they using all machinery to run me down during the campaign, is not easy to face big guns like (DAP supremo) Lim Kit Siang, (PKR de facto leader) Anwar Ibrahim and PAS leaders."

He added that he is mulling lodging a report to the Election Commission (EC) over alleged polls infringements.
"I'm not a sore loser, I feel okay about losing in the election, but please contest in a healthy manner,” he said.
"In any contest, there is winner and loser. The winner needs to serve the people and tomorrow is still waiting for the loser."
He also denied claims that Umno had backed him, resulting in him winning more votes than Ramkarpal in the Sungai Gelugor polling district.
He argued that if Umno was backing him, he would not have lost his deposit as Malay voters make up 14 per cent of the constituency, or about 6,000 voters.
Meanwhile, Independent candidate Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar said his defeat is not unexpected and will not deter him from participating in future elections.
“I accept the results. It is obvious the DAP will get the votes because it is a Chinese-majority area. I will try to contest against in the next election, maybe in (Malay-majority) Shah Alam,” he said when contacted.
Mohamed Nabi Bux garnered 799 votes or 1.9 percent of votes cast.
The other Independent candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan fared worse with 255 votes (0.5 percent), although he pulled out of the race the day before polling.
Abu Backer injected amusement into the by-election through his dramatic campaign antics, which included throwing himself in front of Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng's moving car (above).

To the EC and Police He Goes To Reveal What is Happening
GEORGE TOWN: Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan has lodged several reports with the police and Election Commission against the DAP for breaching election regulations by wooing voters on by-election day in Bukit Gelugor.
Huan showed video evidence of several DAP elected representatives, wearing party colours, talking to voters near polling stations.
He had a public row with DAP leader Phee Boon Poh on the campaigning by the party’s volunteer patrol squad (PPS).
The incident happened outside polling stations in Air Itam and Paya Terubong as the PCM leader was going on his rounds to observe the balloting process this morning.
Huan told Phee that the DAP leader and his PPS members that it was against the law to woo voters on election day.
“I told him that being a state executive councillor he should not be doing this.
“The rules are clear that there should not be any campaigning on polling day,” Huan told newsmen later about his quarrel with Phee.
Phee, however, denied that he and the PPS members were campaigning.
He said the PPS team was at the polling station to oversee a smooth balloting process.
Huan has already lodged a police report and plans to do same with the Election Commission tomorrow.
He said he had video, audio and photographic evidence to prove his claims.
Huan said the voting process was going on smoothly in other places.
Later, DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh Deo, who visited SMK Air Itam at about 10am, said he was not aware about the PPS campaigning or PCM complaints.
He said he was confident of winning but remained concerned about the low-voter turnout, which would dent his chance for a big win.
“We have done our work and it is now up to the people to decide,” he added.
Ramkarpal said his team was keeping watch on probable election irregularities that might take place.
“So far I have not received any complaint,” he said.
He later shook hands with independent candidate Nabi Bux Mohamed Nabi Abd Sathar, 63.
The other independent candidate in the four-cornered battle for Bukit Gelugor is lawyer Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan.

Urgent: Take Note Bukit Gelugor Voters
Tomorrow is voting day for Bukit Gelugor.
I would like to remind pro-DAP supporters that whether DAP have 38 or 37 seats in parliament does not make any difference to Penang govt or Federal govt. Nobody benefits - certainly not you.
38 or 37 doesn't Ubah govt and Ini Kali, it makes no difference.
This is the time to tell Penang govt to stop the increased arrogance, to honour their promises (which they didn't by raising water prices again), to arrest the declining foreign investment, to slow down the insane high-end real-estate development on the island, to protect the hills and water better and for DAP to stop PAS from tabling Hudud.
Not voting DAP doesn't mean you have to vote BN.
Voting Huan in as an independent voice will only mean that DAP state govt will only work much harder to listen to you and to serve you to try to regain your votes in GE14.
You have much to gain and little to lose.

Campaign gets nasty with defaced billboards
GEORGE TOWN: Election billboards have been defaced and negative campaign banners are sprouting as voters get ready to go to the polls for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election tomorrow.
Independent candidate Datuk Huan Cheng Guan found his billboards slashed and his portrait smeared with red paint.
The Parti Cinta Malaysia representative was upset that his billboards at Jalan Yeap Chor Ee, Padang Tembak junction and around the Gelugor roundabout had been defaced.
“I don’t understand why this was done. I am an Independent candidate from a small party,” the 53-year-old lamented during a press conference in Air Itam.
“My banner that was put up outside the DAP headquarters was removed within 24 hours,” he added.
At least three banners in Chinese running down MCA were also put up.
Penang MCA deputy chairman Tan Teik Cheng said they received a public tip-off over the matter at about 10am yesterday.
“This is an act of political cowardice. We condemn such an underhanded tactic to run us down,” he said.
Also at Lebuhraya Thean Teik to investigate the matter were Penang MCA secretary Dr Tan Chuan Hong and Penang MCA new media bureau deputy chief Tan Khai Beng.
In another development, Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer lodged a report at the Jelutong police station after several inflammatory banners were found.
Rayer and a campaign assistant for by-election candidate Ramkarpal Singh collected four banners with inflamatory words.

Although it was touted to be a walk in the park for political debutant Ramkarpal Singh, 38, events in the last few days may spring a surprise on the bachelor.
If he secures a win which is less than his late father Karpal Singh’s 41,778-vote majority, it will spell a blow for the party, especially since Barisan Nasional has stayed out of the contest.
Ramkarpal had publicly said that he wanted a bigger majority on the back of his father’s reputation as a fearless fighter and the wave of public sympathy upon Karpal’s sudden death.
But things have spiralled out of hand and some of the Malay votes which went to his father may now go to Independent candidates Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan and Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar who are championing the Malay cause and PAS’ hudud.

Rayer’s Seri Delima seat is one of the three in Bukit Gelugor with others being Air Itam and Paya Terubong. All are held by DAP assemblymen.
Malay voters comprise 22.6% of the 23,891 voters in Seri Delima, with many of them staying in Kampung Gelugor and Taman Tun Sardon.
In Air Itam, 21.2% of the 18,451 voters are Malays with a big number staying in the Kampung Melayu flats. There are only 6.5% Malay voters in Paya Terubong.

Rayer’s Seri Delima seat is one of the three in Bukit Gelugor with others being Air Itam and Paya Terubong. All are held by DAP assemblymen.
Malay voters comprise 22.6% of the 23,891 voters in Seri Delima, with many of them staying in Kampung Gelugor and Taman Tun Sardon.
In Air Itam, 21.2% of the 18,451 voters are Malays with a big number staying in the Kampung Melayu flats. There are only 6.5% Malay voters in Paya Terubong.
Independent candidate Huan Cheng Guan of Parti Cinta Malaysia has appealed to voters to let him keep his deposit this time around after having lost it twice before.
He has put up billboards saying “I am not a tiger or a cub but the voice of the people”.
He has embarked on an aggressive campaign, launching many salvos against DAP for fielding a candidate who only recently joined the party.
The campaign has been heated with more illegal banners put up in several areas and the defacing of campaign billboards.
