Guan Eng Sued for Slander

BUTTERWORTH: Penang opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid today filed a suit against Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for allegedly labelling her a racist leader.

She said the statement made by Lim has damaged her credibility as an elected representative and destroyed her relationship with the public.

Jahara also alleged that Lim had tarnished her reputation and said the latter practised unhealthy politics.

"The damage has already been done to me," the Teluk Ayer Tawar assemblyman said at a press conference together with her lawyer, Jaharberdeen Mohamed Yunoos.

Jahara's suit comes after Lim allegedly described the former as a "racist grandmother" on Dec 9 last year.

The remarks were allegedly made over her questions in the state assembly that day relating to claims of selective enforcement action taken against Malay hawkers by the Seberang Perai Municipal Council.

Lim had apologised to Jahara the next day but only for using the word "grandmother" and maintained she was a racist.

On Dec 23, Jahara called upon Lim to apologise but the latter did not do so. Jaharberdeen said Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, should make an apology in the print and electronic media for his remark.
