KAJANG: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said someone had tipped off information to British newspaper Daily Mail on his links with captain of MH370 Zaharie Ahmad Shah and news was immediately picked up by Umno cybertroopers.
“The minute the newspaper published the information Umno cybertroopers and mainstream media went to town with it,” said the PKR supremo during Himpunan Reformasi 2.0 assembly at Kajang Stadium last night.
“Who passed the information to The Daily Mail that Zaharie is related to me?” asked Anwar.
The Daily Mail is the first newspaper that reported Zaharie’s links to Anwar. Zaharie is a distant relative and a life member of PKR.
Earlier, Anwar called for Defence Minister Hishamuddin Hussein’s resignation for failing to ensure the security of the nation.
The MH370 flight carrying 239 passengers and crew members went missing on March 8. The Beijing-bound flight made a U-turn and is believed to have headed out towards the Indian Ocean.
Himpunan Reformasi 2.0 assembly was held to show solidarity support for people who have been victims of selective persecution and to shore up support for Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Azizah, who is also PKR president, is contesting against MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun for the Kajang state seat tomorrow.
The Kajang state seat fell vacant following the resignation of incumbent assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh of PKR on Jan 27.
The state seat comprises 39,728 registered voters. In the last general election in May 2013, the seat saw a voter turnout of 87.9% with 541 spoilt votes.
