Wan Azizah: Anwar withdrew from polls due to sodomy conviction

PETALING JAYA:  PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dropped out of the race for party president due to his March 7 conviction, said current PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (pic).

Wan Azizah ran uncontested for the president’s post and secured a default win in the upcoming party polls after the only other candidate, Anwar, announced his withdrawal from the race Tuesday via PKR election director Datuk Johari Abdul.

“The withdrawal of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s candidacy for president was taken following restraints within the Society’s Act, as a result of the Court of Appeal’s judgment that bars him from proceeding with his wish to lead Keadilan,” she said in a press conference at PKR headquarters on Wednesday.

However, Wan Azizah said that Anwar would continue to push for his reformation agenda despite the difficulties faced.

She also quashed rumours that Anwar’s bid for presidency was a strategic move to block certain PKR members from helming the party.

Anwar’s attempt to contest the president’s post was put to question after he was sentenced to five years’ jail by the Court of Appeal for sodomising an aide.

With regards to party polls, Wan Azizah expressed her satisfaction with the way election preparations are carried out and reminded contestants to practice clean campaigning in the spirit of good competition.

Party elections for national and division posts will run from April 26 to May 11. Official results are expected to be released two days after polling closes.
